cash

(1) coins or negotiable paper issued by governments as well as the balance in demand deposit accounts. For accounting purposes, cash includes money in the cash drawer, the vault, petty cash and checking account deposits in thrift institutions or banks. (2) the process of presenting a check for payment: literally of converting a check to cash.
