remittitur

"The process of an appellate court sending back the trial and appellate record of a case to the lower court, with an order to such lower court to act in accordance with the appellate judgment. In another sense, remittitur is the act of a plaintiff giving up damages returned by the jury, which are in excess of the amount prayed for in the Complaint or Petition."
